Synopsis

Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon) es un joven idealista recién salido de la facultad de derecho. Entre sus aspiraciones está la de conseguir clientes adinerados a los que facturar gran cantidad de horas y con ello convertirse en un buen "fichaje" para el afortunado bufete que tenga la afortunada idea de contratarle. Rudy ya cuenta con dos casos. Uno es el de una anciana que cree tener mucho dinero y que se lo quiere dejar en herencia a un predicador de televisión. El otro caso es el de la familia de un joven en fase terminal de leucemia, al que su compañía de seguros ha estafado y se niega a pagarle un trasplante de médula ósea. Rudy se acaba asociando con Bruiser Stone (Mickey Rourke), un sórdido abogado que tiene negocios en los bajos fondos de Menfis. En el mismo bufete está Deck Shifett (Danny De Vito), un especulador que, a pesar de conocer perfectamente el sistema judicial, no ha sido capaz de aprobar el examen de licenciatura de derecho. Casi sin darse cuenta, Rudy se mete de lleno en un caso que hará tambalearse el sistema, dejando al descubierto la empresa de seguros que se está haciendo millonaria estafando a gente humilde y sin apenas recursos económicos.
