Synopsis

Ambientada en Cantón en 1875, Érase una vez en China narra la historia del legendario y sabio maestro de kung fu Wong Feihung (Jet Li).

Las relaciones de China con los extranjeros invasores se están volviendo insostenibles ante la amenaza que sufren sus tradiciones y su cultura, y las armas de fuego se imponen en eficacia a las artes marciales.

Por ello Wong toma el control de la milicia local a fin de enfrentarse a los corruptos extranjeros que, junto con un grupo de bandidos chinos, tratan de engañar a los pobladores locales para que viajen a América con intención de convertirles en esclavos.

Por si fuera poco, la situación se volverá aún más personal para Wong cuando su amada Yee sea secuestrada a fin de venderla como prostituta.
