Un psicópata conocido como Buffalo Bill está secuestrando y asesinando a jóvenes mujeres por todo el medio oeste de Estados Unidos.

Teniendo en cuenta que si conoces a uno puedes conocer al resto, el F.B.I. envía a la Agente Clarice Starling (Foster) a entrevistar a un prisionero demente que quizás pueda proporcionar una visión psicológica de la mente del asesino y pistas sobre sus acciones.

El prisionero es un psiquiatra conocido como Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins), un brillante asesino caníbal que únicamente se comprometerá a ayudar a Starling si ella alimenta su curiosidad con detalles sobre su propia vida.

Esta retorcida relación obliga a Starling no sólo a enfrentarse con sus propios demonios psicológicos, sino que además le llevará a enfrentarse cara a cara con un asesino atroz y demente, la encarnación de una maldad tan poderosa como nunca antes había conocido.
