Clint Eastwood dirige a Angelina Jolie y a John Malkovich en un drama emotivo y provocador basado en unos acontecimientos reales que transformaron la ciudad de Los Ángeles. El Intercambio cuenta la historia de una mujer con una fuerza indomable que no se rindió ante un corrupto departamento de policía e hizo posible una nueva época de dignidad e igualdad.

Los Ángeles, marzo de 1928. Un precioso sábado por la mañana en un barrio obrero, Christine Collins (la oscarizada Angelina Jolie), madre soltera, se despide de Walter, su hijo de nueve años, para acudir a su trabajo de operadora telefónica. Pero cuando Christine regresa a su casa, se enfrenta a la peor pesadilla de cualquier madre: su hijo ha desaparecido.

Lo denuncia ante la policía y empieza una minuciosa e infructuosa búsqueda. Walter ha desaparecido sin dejar rastro. Sin embargo cinco meses después, aparece otro niño que asegura ser su hijo. La policía, a la que le vendrá muy bien la publicidad que surgirá de un reencuentro público, le entrega el niño.

Christine, aturdida por los fotógrafos, los reporteros y la policía, acaba llevándoselo a casa a pesar de saber que no es su hijo Walter.
