Synopsis

William Parrish (Anthony Hopkins) es un magnate de la prensa cuya fortuna figura entre las mayores del mundo.

Vive rodeado de todo el exquisito lujo que es capaz de imaginar, es cultivado y refinado, tiene una familia que lo adora y a la que adora y no tiene problemas aparentes de salud.

Sin embargo sus mansiones, de paredes recubiertas por pinturas que desean poseer todos los museos del mundo, son como dependencias del Infierno.

En la víspera de su 65 cumpleaños, su hija Susan está preparando una fiesta como no se ha visto en los últimos cien años.

Una diversión que Parrish ve totalmente ajena.

Su existencia sólo se conmociona al conocer a Joe Black (Brad Pitt), un enigmático joven que se ha enamorado de Susan.

Joe trata a Parrish como el gran hombre que es y del que tiene mucho por aprender.

Pero ni el amor ni el respeto que desarrolla por Parrish pueden hacerle olvidar su misión.
